Storm Fall to Hawks

PAINESVILLE-Soccer is a 90-minute game, but Thursday afternoon, the visiting Hilbert College Hawks used just 10 minutes against Lake Erie to post a 4-0 victory in a women's soccer non-conference affair.

With the loss, Lake Erie falls to 0-12 on the season, while Hilbert improves their mark to 6-3 on the year.

The Storm welcomed back senior captain Abby Bricker to the squad, and she helped bunker down the Lake Erie defense in the first half as the two teams were tied 0-0 at the half. However, senior midfielder Kim Vazquez was a scratch before the contest because of an ankle injury that is likely to keep her out for the next two weeks.

Lake Erie's defense began to wear down in the second half as Hilbert notched three goals in a 10-minute span to help seal the victory, which was their fourth in a row. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Macri, who was the team's leading points scorer, opened the scoring with a goal at the 52-minute to give Hilbert a 1-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Amy Kegler notched an unassisted goal just six minutes later to up the margin to 2-0. Sophomore forward Shannon Bieniek then tacked on the third goal in the short span as she netted a goal off a Macri assist. Bieniek closed out the scoring with a goal at the 85th_ minute to give the Hawks the 4-0 victory.

Freshman keeper Jane Roberts, who leads the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in saves, made nine stops on the night in 90 minutes of action. Vinnita Macri made three stops for Hilbert in posting her fourth shut-out of the season.

The Storm will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they will travel to D'Youville College for a non-conference affair. Last season Lake Erie beat D'Youville 9-0 and will be looking to repeat that performance this season. That contest is set to begin at 2:00 p.m., which will then be followed by the men's contest at 4:00 p.m.
