Oberlin Settles Storm

PAINESVILLE-It seemed like the right situation for Lake Erie that they would break into the win column against the visiting Oberlin Yeowomen. After all, Oberlin had dropped their first two decisions on the season, and Lake Erie was at home for the first time this season. However, injuries forced the Storm into a two-person bench, and the Yeowomen took advantage as they posted a 6-0 victory in non-conference action on Wednesday night.

The Storm now drops to 0-3 on the year, while Oberlin improved their mark to 1-2. For the Storm, the trouble started at the end of each half as Oberlin picked up three goals in a span of 12 minutes during the first half to take a 3-0 lead at half-time. Oberlin matched that total in the second half as they posted three more goals in about a 10-minute span to conclude their scoring.

Tracy Dolence finished the contest with 24 saves, but Oberlin pounded out 13 shots on the senior goalkeeper. The Storm managed just two shots on Oberlin keepers Alison Palmer and Julie Noyes who each recorded a save apiece. The Yeowomen were led by Becky Kanuch who finished with two goals and two assists, while Courtney Stackhouse also finished with two goals.

"Our defense is strong, but they can't be relied upon to defend 80 minutes of game," said head coach Lauren Ferullo. "They can't fuel us for the entire 90 minutes."

Senior and all-time scoring leader Katie Jayne is yet to score on the season, and she managed just one shot in the game.

"We're just not passing right now, and when we get the ball, we seem to panic with it," Ferullo said.

Lake Erie wil try to pick up their first win on Saturday when they host Bethany College out of Virginia. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00.
