Early Goals Doom Storm

PAINESVILLE-The Lake Erie Storm wishes that they could go back and re-start the first 18-minutes of their AMCC showdown with the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats.

During that span, Greensburg ran out to an early 4-0 lead behind the scoring of Melissa Wiggins who capped her hat-trick early in the first half. The early goals provided a hole that was to deep to climb out of for the Storm who cut the lead to 4-3 early in the second half before allowing Wiggins to score again on a Penalty Kick.

The Storm did manage to get senior Katie Jayne on track as the school's All-Time leading points scorer accounted for two goals and an assist in the losing effort. Kristin Antonchak also scored a goal and registered an assist in the game.

For the Bobcats, it was definitely the "Wiggins" show as she finished the game with four goals, all of which went unassisted. Nichole Whitely registered the only other goal for Greensburg, who have begun to make some noise in the AMCC in only their second year of existence. With the win, Greensburg is now 3-7 overall but have posted a 2-2 record in league play.

The early goals may have sunk the Storm in the end, but Lake Erie made the game interesting with about 30 minutes left. Jayne scored off an Annick Toulouse feed to cut the deficit to 4-1 heading into the half. Antonchak to a Jayne pass and blasted a shot past Greensburg keeper Lindsay Schaeffer to make the score 4-2 with about 40 minutes to play. Jayne then cashed in her second goal of the day to cut the lead to 4-3 with 38:00 minutes left in the game. The backbreaker for the Storm came after defender Lisa Gonzalez took down Greensburg's Jessica Mancino in the box and was whistled for a foul. Wiggins cashin in the Penalty kick to extend the Bobcat's lead to 5-3 and deter any chance of a Storm comeback.

Lake Erie is now 1-10-1 on the season, and they are still looking for their first league win as they are now 0-5 in AMCC action. The Storm will be back in action on Monday night when they will host Marietta College in a non-conference affair.
