ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Lake Erie College women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday, Sept. 6.
Isabella Carvalho scored the equalizer early in the second half, while goalkeeper
Morgan Vanmeter made seven saves to help the Storm secure the road result.
Roberts Wesleyan opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Nevaeh Bunch found the lower-left corner off an assist from Sam Cipolla.
Lake Erie responded by creating several opportunities over the remainder of the first half.
Ava Moore,
Carvalho, and
Alice McKenna each placed a shot on goal, but Redhawks goalkeeper Mia Tyndell kept the Storm off the scoreboard to preserve the 1-0 advantage entering halftime.
The Storm broke through less than five minutes into the second half. From a corner kick,
Carvalho sent a shot into the upper-left corner in the 50th minute to level the match at 1-1. The goal was
Carvalho's first of the season.
Roberts Wesleyan applied pressure throughout the remainder of the match, but
Vanmeter and the Lake Erie defense held firm.
Vanmeter recorded five of her seven saves after halftime, including four during an eight-minute stretch midway through the second half.
Carvalho led the Storm offensively with three shots, placing two on goal.
Moore and
McKenna each added a shot on target. Roberts Wesleyan finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, while Lake Erie placed four of its six attempts on goal.
With the draw, Lake Erie moves to 1-1-2 on the season and extends its unbeaten streak to two matches. The Storm will open Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Owensboro, Kentucky, to face Kentucky Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
