Panthers Slip by the Storm

Painesville, Ohio — The Lake Erie College football team fell 27-19 to the Ohio Dominican University Panthers on Saturday night at Jack Britt Stadium.

Senior tight end Devin Morgan led the Storm with 103 yards on 11 catches to go along with a touchdown. Quarterback Hunter Newell spread the ball around to his other targets as well, finishing 28-of-38 for 279 yards and a score. However, he was also intercepted twice in the loss.

Dalen Stovall added four catches for 73 yards, while Tyleik Maxwell snagged five balls for 56 yards. The Storm ground game never got going, as Julian Means-Flewellen was held to 42 yards on 12 carries, while Hakeem Quran totaled 31 yards on eight attempts.

ODU marched 72 yards on 14 plays on the opening drive of the game to claim a 6-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Nathan Webster. It would remain that way until late in the opening half, when Carson Parker snuck his way into the end zone with 2:47 left to make it a 12-0 advantage.

Following a couple of promising opportunities that went for naught earlier in the half, the Storm offense came to life during a two-minute drive, running 14 plays and covering 72 yards in 2:44 before Jalen Joyce punched it in from a yard out to make it a 12-7 game at the intermission. The drive featured a 16-yard catch by Morgan on 3rd-and-6 and a 14-yard grab by Jayson Nami on 4th-and-6. Stovall also had a 19-yard catch-and-run down to the 1-yard line, where he was brought down with just one second left to give Joyce the chance to punch it in.

Lake Erie received the ball to open the second half and went right back to work on offense, as Newell and company orchestrated a 12-play, 77-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard shovel pass to Morgan for a touchdown, putting the Storm out in front 13-12 with 8:58 left in the third quarter.

Unfortunately, ODU responded by reclaiming the lead on an 11-yard touchdown run from Parker. The Panthers added an all-important insurance touchdown with 6:24 left in the game, as a blown coverage in the LEC secondary led to an easy 25-yard TD for Luke Hess to make it a two-score advantage.

The Storm continued to fight, answering back with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Joyce's second score of the night. However, their ensuing onside kick was corralled by ODU to effectively end the game.

Jason Hewlett led the defense with 11 tackles, while Kemari Ward added 10 in the loss.

Lake Erie will be back in action next Saturday at home when it hosts Hillsdale at 1 p.m.
