PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Lake Erie College women's soccer team battled No. 7 Ashland University on Thursday night but fell 3-0 at Campus Field.
The Storm defense held the Eagles scoreless throughout the opening 45 minutes despite facing 12 shots and 10 corner kicks. Goalkeeper Morgan VanMeter helped preserve the scoreless tie by making five saves in the first half.
Ashland broke through shortly after halftime when Tessa Blain scored in the 50th minute off an assist from Sofia Divine. Lake Erie looked for an equalizer, with Isabella Carvalho recording the Storm's lone shot of the match in the 63rd minute.
The Eagles extended their lead in the 76th minute when Divine scored off an assist from Cece Craig. Haley Hightower completed the scoring in the 81st minute, heading in a corner kick from Divine.
VanMeter finished the match with a season-high 11 saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
Lake Erie moves to 2-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in G-MAC play. The Storm remain home to face Ursuline College on Saturday, September 26, at noon at Campus Field.
