Storm Sink Sharks in Hawaiian Finale

HONOLULU - The Lake Erie College men's basketball team closed out its three-game trip at the Hoops in Hawaii Classic on Sunday night, earning a 90-84 win over Hawaii Pacific.

The Storm used a balanced scoring attack while shooting a season-high 40.6 percent (28-69) from the floor, which included a season-best 12-of-41 (29.3%) showing from beyond the arc.

Gio Moore led the way with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds. Griffin Turay added 13 points, while Jamyier Patton and Ryan Rodriquez each chipped in with 12 points apiece.

The Storm swarmed the Sharks from the onset, using their relentless defensive pressure to force nine HPU turnovers in the first eight minutes to build up a 20-5 lead. However, the Sharks came biting back, ripping off an 18-8 response run to trim the LEC advantage down to 28-23 at the 5:30 mark.

LEC would push lead back out to eight multiple times in the closing minutes of the half, but the Sharks stayed within striking distance and ultimately leveled the game at 40-40 heading into the intermission.

Out of the break, the Storm would cash in back-to-back threes from Moore and Riley Cervenka to create a little breathing room. An old-school 3-point play from Rodriquez swelled the Storm lead to 11, 58-47, with just under 16 minutes left to play.

After going down by as many as 12, HPU would answer back with a scoring run of its own to shrink the differential down to just two, 66-64, with over eight minutes remaining.

An Ike Sutton 3-pointer tied the score at 71-all and the Sharks would briefly go out in front for the first time of the night on a Keonjay Carter 3-ball that made 77-75 with just over four minutes to go.

A triple-hit from Patton put the Storm back out in front for good, 80-77. Later in the period, a personal 4-0 burst from Patton put the Storm up 86-79 with 35 ticks left on the clock and LEC would go 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the closing seconds to finish off the victory.

The Storm cashed in 26 points off 24 HPU turnovers and netted 21 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds.

Lake Erie returns home to host Penn State Du Bois next Monday at 5 p.m.
