Back's Late Equalizer Earns Storm Draw

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Malone University on Thursday, October 15, at home. A late equalizer from Natalee Back and a milestone performance from goalkeeper Morgan VanMeter highlighted the Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.

The first half featured a defensive battle, with both teams creating opportunities but neither finding the back of the net. Lake Erie recorded five shots in the opening 45 minutes, while Malone registered four. VanMeter kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard with three first-half saves, sending the teams into halftime tied 0-0.

Malone increased its offensive pressure in the second half, recording 11 shots. VanMeter continued to anchor the Storm defense, making several key stops to keep the contest scoreless.

The Pioneers finally broke through in the 82nd minute when Jojo Knight found the upper-left corner of the net from approximately 20 yards out, giving Malone a 1-0 advantage with less than nine minutes remaining.

Despite the late deficit, the Storm refused to back down. Lake Erie generated back-to-back shots on goal from Alexia Pallas and Isabella Carvalho in the 85th minute, forcing saves from Malone goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan.

The persistence paid off in the 88th minute when Carvalho delivered a corner kick into the box, connecting with Back, who headed the ball into the net to even the score at 1-1. The goal marked Back's second of the season, while Carvalho earned her second assist on the year.

VanMeter delivered another strong performance in goal, finishing with six saves across 90 minutes. During the contest, she reached the impressive milestone of 300 career saves, adding another accomplishment to her collegiate career.

Malone held a 15-10 advantage in total shots, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Carvalho led the Storm offensively with three shots, while VanMeter's six saves helped secure the draw.

With the result, Lake Erie moves to 3-7-4 overall and 2-6-2 in G-MAC play, while Malone stands at 4-6-3 overall and 3-5-2 in conference action. The Storm are back in action Saturday Oct. 17 as they host the Ohio Dominican Panthers at 7pm for Senior Night.
