Bats Struggle in Canton Against Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie softball team continued their season today with a road doubleheader against the Malone Pioneers. The offense struggled to get going in the series and the Storm lost both games, dropping another G-MAC doubleheader.

GAME 1

LAKE ERIE - 1
MALONE - 5

The game got off to a slow start for both teams as they combined for just one hit across the first two innings. In the third, the Pioneers took the lead with a two-run inning but the Storm responded right back in the fourth.

With two outs, Emma Spahr cut the Malone lead in half with a solo home run to center field. This would prove to be one of the Storm's two hits in the game as the team struggled offensively and fell, 5-1.

In the circle, despite allowing eleven hits, Addison Nugent pitched all six innings for the Storm and allowed just four earned runs.

WP: M. Rose (9-10)
LP: Addison Nugent (1-17)

GAME 2

LAKE ERIE - 1
MALONE - 2

Malone struck first to begin game two, scratching out a run in the bottom of the first. The Storm got their first hit of the game in the third inning in a big way on an Emma Spahr triple to to right center field. Spahr did not cross the plate unfortunately and the Pioneers would extend their lead to 2-0 in the bottom half.

In the seventh, the Storm finally got their first run of the game after Peyton Powers led off the inning with a double and crossed home on an RBI single up the middle by CJ Garcia. Garcia reached as far as second in the inning but Lake Erie was unable to bring her home, resulting in a close 2-1 loss.

Powers delivered two hits on the day while Spahr and Garcia accounted for the other hits.

Kai Mortensen had a solid performance in the circle, throwing a complete game, allowing seven hits and one earned run while walking just one.

WP: A. Weilnau (14-5)
LP: Kai Mortensen (1-16)
