PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie men's lacrosse team triumphed over the Tiffin Dragons on Monday afternoon, securing a hard-fought 6-3 victory. After building a commanding 5-1 lead heading into the final quarter, Tiffin mounted a comeback, scoring twice in quick succession. However, a 30-minute lightning delay effectively halted their momentum, allowing Lake Erie to regain control and clinch a home playoff game.
The Storm conclude their regular season with an impressive 7-6 overall record and a stellar 7-2 mark in G-MAC play – marking their first season with seven conference wins in program history. Looking ahead, Lake Erie's final seeding will depend on the outcome of tomorrow afternoon's matchup between Seton Hill (8-0) and Walsh (6-2). A Seton Hill victory would grant the Storm a coveted first-round playoff bye and a home semi-final game scheduled for Wednesday, April 30th. Conversely, a Walsh win would place Lake Erie as the third seed, hosting a quarter-final game this upcoming weekend.
Game Recap
It was all Lake Erie in the opening period, as the Storm's defense picked up right where it left off in their scoreless second-half performance at Davenport. The unit blanked the Dragons on just five total shots, setting the tone early. On the offensive end, Andrew Cramer struck first at the 9:36 mark off a nice assist from Robert Weil. John Collins followed with a goal of his own later in the period, giving the Storm a 2–0 edge after the opening 15 minutes.
Collins kept rolling in the second, finding the back of the net once again to stretch the lead to three. Tiffin finally got on the board midway through the quarter, trimming the deficit to 3–1. But just before halftime, Billy Coughlin notched his 13th goal of the season, sending Lake Erie into the break with a 4–1 lead.
The third quarter was a defensive chess match, with only one goal scored—Robert Weil's 10th of the year, pushing the Storm ahead 5–1 and seemingly cementing a home playoff appearance.
Tiffin came out firing in the fourth, scoring twice within the first 62 seconds to pull within two at 5–3. But a timely 30-minute lightning delay proved to be a blessing for the home side, as it halted the Dragons' surge and gave the Storm time to reset. Coming out of the break, Lake Erie's defense slammed the door shut, and Kyle Gardner capped things off with his 12th goal of the year to seal the 6–3 win.
