PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's lacrosse team battled Malone on Monday, but despite a hard-fought effort, fell to the Senators 13-7. The first three periods were highly competitive, with Malone holding a narrow 7-6 lead entering the final stretch. However, the fourth period proved decisive as the Storm managed just two shots compared to Malone's eight. With three games in the next six days, Lake Erie will have plenty of opportunities to bounce back and improve upon their 1-10 record.
Game Recap
Despite what the standings may say, the Storm offense continued their theme of being incredibly productive out of the gate, scoring twice before four minutes had run off the clock. Reese Friesen got her team headed in the right direction at the 13:47 mark, and Madelyn Goodrich followed two minutes later, putting the score at 2-1. Malone responded quickly to tie the game, and with 20 seconds before the period ended, scored to take their first lead of the night.
The second period started slow on both sides, but Lainey Davis changed that at the nine-minute mark as she scored her second goal of the season (credit the assist to Goodrich), as the Storm knotted the game at three-apiece. The Senators took all of 29 seconds to reclaim their lead, but Brooke McNeal would have an answer of her own, scoring with 4:42 left before halftime. Another Malone goal gave them the slight 5-4 advantage at the break, concluding an exciting half of action.
Madelyn Goodrich, as she has so many times in her career for the green and white, found the back of the net as five minutes passed from the start of the third period, marking the fifth tie of the night. From here, however, the Senators scored back-to-back goals, marking the first two-score lead for either team as they took a 7-5 advantage. Reese Friesen would have no part of that, scoring just 23 seconds after the Storm won a draw control, helping cut their deficit to 7-6 as the teams prepared for the final period of play.
After three periods of impressive play, the Storm faltered in the fourth, becoming out-scored 6-1. Three-straight Malone goals put them up by four, but Brooke McNeal stopped the bleeding momentarily, keeping the game within reach at 10-7 with around 10 minutes to go. However, the Senators had a lot in the tank, adding the final three goals of the night and walking out with a 13-7 victory.
