NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie softball team traveled to North Canton today to take on the Walsh University Cavaliers. The Storm carried momentum over from their last series and played the Cavaliers close but would end up dropping both games in the series.
GAME 1
LAKE ERIE - 0
WALSH - 5
The Cavaliers jumped out to and early 1-0 lead in the first after a two-out walk followed by a double.
The Storm offense struggled in the game and got both of their hits in the third, courtesy of
Brynn Gillen and
Sydney Taylor. Despite the two-hit inning, they were unable to score.
Walsh scored two more in the bottom half and two more in the bottom of the fifth to seal a 5-0 win in game one.Â
Despite the loss,
Addison Nugent had a decent game in the circle. Surrendering seven hits and striking out a season-high five batters across six complete innings. The outing marks back-to-back complete games for Nugent as she continues to improve on the season.
WP: C. Sayre (3-3)
LP: Addison Nugent (0-10)
GAME 2
LAKE ERIE - 1
WALSH - 2
Much like their final game against Ursuline on Thursday, it was a battle dominated by pitching and the common denominator was
Kai Mortensen.
Mortensen pitched all six innings, allowing just seven hits and two runs while striking out two. It was an incredibly effective outing for her as it only took 76 pitches to get through all six innings.
The Cavaliers scratched their first run in the bottom of the second and it wasn't until the fourth inning that the Storm responded with one of their own.
In the inning,
Emma Spahr reached first on an error and advanced to second on the same play.
Madi Eckert would then drive her in with an RBI single to second base to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the sixth though, the Cavaliers broke the tie, scoring just once but that was all they needed and the Storm fell 2-1 to close out the doubleheader.
Offensively, Spahr ended the day going 2-for-3, with
CJ Garcia,
Sydney Taylor, and Eckert accounting for the remaining hits.
WP: M. Smythe (3-7)
LP: Kai Mortensen (1-10)
