PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's soccer team battled against a tough Findlay Oilers squad on Saturday night and took home the victory by a final score of 2-0. After being ranked No. 10 in Thursday's edition of the United Soccer Coaches regional rankings, the Storm now enter the most challenging stretch of their schedule, facing the 7-1-2 Cedarville Yellow Jackets next before meeting No. 14 nationally ranked Ashland.
Game Recap
Despite forcing the Storm on the defensive for much of the first period, with exactly 70% of the time the ball being across the LEC side, it was the Storm who fired the game's first shot at the 17-minute mark. Leonie Witt assisted Ainsley MacKenzie for a senior-to-senior connection to take a 1-0 lead, where despite seven Oiler shots in the remaining 28 minutes, the score remained.
Both defenses continued to play incredibly hard to start the second half but in the 77th minute, the Storm extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Isabella Carvalho and held onto that lead until the final whistle.
The Matchup
Entering Saturday night's contest, Lake Erie was riding a 0-8-1 stretch in this inter-conference matchup. The Storm's last win over Findlay came exactly eight years ago today in 2017, a season in which they took both meetings.
Looking Ahead
Next on the schedule for Lake Erie is another home matchup, this time against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets on Thursday, October 16th at 4 p.m. Sitting at 7-1-2, the Yellow Jackets' only loss came early in the season to No. 5 Grand Valley by a 3-2 score. Since then, they've been dominant, outscoring their last eight opponents by 17 goals while going 6-0-2. In nearly every G-MAC team statistic, they rank second only to Ashland, mirroring the preseason poll where those two programs were the lone recipients of first-place votes. With only one goal this year coming from a senior, Cedarville's youthful core suggests their success is built to last.
After Cedarville, the Storm will hit the road to face the formidable No. 14 Ashland Eagles next Saturday night. The Eagles are led by senior Dani Hicks, who tops the G-MAC in scoring with nine goals—matching the combined season totals of Tiffin (2) and Kentucky Wesleyan (7).
