Volleyball Falls to Eagles on the Road in Straight Sets

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Volleyball team continued their road stretch to continue G-MAC competition as they would compete against the Ashland Eagles. The Storm would be in search for their first G-MAC win of the season, but the Eagles would prevail in straight sets. Lake Erie moves to 0-4 in the G-MAC and 2-10 overall.

Game Recap

The first set of the match would see the Eagles take advantage of early Storm attack errors to take an early 5-1 lead. After an Ashland kill and two aces, Ashland would grow their lead to 12-6. Lake Erie would cut their deficit down to 13-10 highlighted by two Eagles attack errors, a kill by freshman Nora Larson, and a block by seniors Katelyn McMoore and Anna Lewis. The Eagles would blow the set open by taking advantage of more Storm attack errors along with their own kills to take a 23-13 lead. Kills by McMoore and freshman Allison Kirch and a block by redshirt freshman Rori Hanken and sophomore Diamond Baker would not be enough as Ashland would hold on to win the first set by a score of 25-17.

The second set would see each team exchanging points. Ashland would see the biggest lead in the set early by taking a 4-1 lead. Two Kirch kills and a block by McMoore and Baker would erase the early Eagles lead to tie the set at 4-4. The Storm would see their first lead in the match by taking a 8-7 after three kills from McMoore, assisted by senior Brooklyn Broadway and sophomore Jenna Sayles. After Ashland would grab a 14-12 lead, both teams would begin exchanging points. After two kills from Hanken, assisted by senior Sarah Leyden and freshman Cecelia Mullen, Lake Erie would take a 20-19 lead. Kills by Kirch and Larson would not be enough for the Storm as the Eagles would hold off the Storm to win the second set by a score of 25-23.

The third set would begin the same as the second set with each team exchanging points. Two kills from Larson and an ace from Mullen would see the score tied at 3-3. The Eagles would see the first lead in the set after taking a 7-4 lead. After a McMoore kill to bring the score to 7-5, Ashland would win eight of the next nine points to break open the set to give Ashland a 15-6 lead. The Eagles would grow their lead to 20-8 after multiple Storm miscues. Storm kills by Larson and Kirch, and a block by McMoore and Lewis would cut the Ashland lead down to nine. The Eagles offense would prove to strong as they would win the third set by a score of 25-14. 

The Storm offense was led by McMoore and Kirch, who each had eight kills. Leyden would lead the team with 14 assists and Sayles would add in 10. The Storm defense was led by McMoore, who had three blocks, and Broadway would lead the team with 13 digs. 

The Matchup

The Storm loss would grow their losing streak to the Eagles to seven and their overall record against the Eagles to 1-18 with their lone win against the Eagles coming in 2015.

Lake Erie will head home to continue G-MAC competition as they take on Thomas More University on Sunday, September 29th at 1 p.m.
