PEPPER PIKE, Ohio -- The women's soccer team visited Ursuline on Thursday, losing a highly competitive game 1-0. This loss puts the Storm at a 1-3 record on the season and 0-1 in conference game-play.
Game Recap
This matchup had a very old-school, grit-and-grind feel to it, as the teams spent as much time fouling each other as they did getting shots up (22 fouls and shots collectively). The majority of the game consisted of battling near midfield for possession and positioning, with the Storm offense never able to build sustained attacking opportunities. In fact, the Storm were only able to attempt one shot from within the penalty area, highlighting just how difficult it was for Lake Erie to get quality looks. Interestingly, the same can be said for Ursuline's offense, yet they were able to capitalize on this lapse in the Storm defense, scoring the game's only goal, 83 minutes in. The Storm failed to respond in the remaining seven minutes, capping off an offensive period in which they had zero corner kicks and only four shot attempts.
Leading the effort for the Storm in shots was
Leonie Witt (3) and
Abby Piks (2). Goalkeeper
Morgan Vanmeter continues to impress, as she recorded 7 saves in the contest.
The Matchup
Following Thursday's loss, the all-time record now sits at 5-14-1 in favor of Ursuline. Last year,
Leonie Witt led the Storm to a 2-1 victory, ending a six-game series drought against Ursuline. In that game, Witt was involved in both goals, recording an assist in the 20th minute and then scoring herself in the 77th minute. The Storm will look to take revenge and tighten the series deficit against Ursuline when the Arrows come to town on November 6th in both team's regular season finale.
Looking Ahead
Lake Erie will look to erase their memory of this game when they host Malone on Saturday at 1pm. Malone comes into the contest with a 3-0-1 record, beating fellow G-MAC foe Tiffin on Thursday 1-0. Like the Storm, Malone faced off against D'Youville previously this season, beating them 2-0, whereas the Storm were able to crush D'Youville 4-0.
