CRESTVIEW HILLS, Kentucky -- The Lake Erie women's basketball team traveled to face the Thomas More University Saints today for their first Great Midwest contest of the season. The Storm would fall 67-47 to bring their record to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in G-MAC play.Â
Game Recap
With their last two contests postponed due to weather, the Storm played their first game in 12 days. While trying to knock off the rust, they started out the game going 0-for-6 with three turnovers while the Saints went on a 10-0 run. Lake Erie got on the board with a three-pointer by
Nina Shaffer to break the scoreless drought but that would prove to be their only basket of the quarter. After their initial run, the Storm defense impressed and held the Saints to just five more points in the quarter.
The second was a hard-fought back-and-forth game and the Storm shot much better (31.3% from the field and 30% from deep).
Kylie Maxwell led the way with seven points and three rebounds in the quarter, accounting for just over half of the Lake Erie points.
The second half started out much like the first quarter did with the Saints going on a run to start. By the end of the quarter, the Storm were down 52-26. Although Lake Erie's offense showed some life in the fourth, it was not enough to erase the deficit and they drop their first G-MAC matchup.
Shaffer and Maxwell finished the day with 12 points each. All of Shaffer's baskets came from deep and Maxwell ended up totaling six rebounds.Â
The Matchup
Tonight's game marks just the second time that the two sides have met with the Saints taking their first meeting last season. Lake Erie will get the chance to even the season series on January 16th at home.
Looking Ahead
The Storm will be back in action on Saturday, December 14th at home against the Malone University Pioneers. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
