PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's soccer team concluded their 2024 season on Wednesday in a night game versus Ursuline, losing the match 2-1. The Storm finish 3-13-2 on the year, 1-11-2 in conference matchups.
Game Recap
The first Lake Erie shot attempt wouldn't come until the 19th minute yet they made it count, as junior
Ainsley MacKenzie scored her third goal of the season, driving the Storm to an early 1-0 lead. However, the Arrows responded in the 32nd minute, knotting the game at one-score apiece. The remainder of the half would consist of a handful of shots by both sides, none of which converted, leading the teams entering halftime tied.
Storm goals-leader
Leonie Witt was inches away from reclaiming the lead as the period opened, as she was blocked on a fast-break shot, recovered quickly and struck the top post on her next attempt. Lake Erie wouldn't know it then, but that opportunity would be their best chance of scoring again, as other than two fabulously-placed free kicks from Witt that were even more impressively saved by Ursuline's keeper, the offense was regulated mightily in the half. To their credit, the Storm handily won time-of-possession and kept the ball in enemy territory, yet the Arrows' sturdy defense held steady and limited shots. On the other end, Ursuline fired at will yet with outstanding accuracy, making Storm goalkeeper
Morgan Vanmeter work hard all day. Unfortunately for the Storm, their defense wasn't able to limited the Arrows from scoring in the 52nd minute following a corner-kick scramble. This goal happened to be the differentiator, as neither team got in the scoring column for the remainder of the game.
The Matchup
For the second time this year, the Storm were on the wrong end of a one-score game with the Arrows, as their deficit in the series now moves to 5-15-1 all-time. Last season, the Storm finished their year with a win against Ursuline, as
Leonie Witt contributed a goal and assisted
Taylor Hartman on a score as well in a 2-1 victory.
