Volleyball Loses in Straight Sets in Non-Conference Match at Wheeling

WHEELING, West Virginia -- The Lake Erie volleyball team competed in a non-conference matchup on the road against the Wheeling Cardinals. The Cardinals would take a comfortable straight-sets victory over the Storm. Lake Erie now moves to 8-19 overall.

Game Recap

The first set began with teams exchanging back and forth. Lake Erie would grab the first lead in the set taking a 4-3 lead after a block from freshman Gabrielle Jones and sophomore Kennady Wiley. Wheeling would take the next four points to grab a 7-4 lead. The Storm would cut the Cardinals lead to 10-9 after two kills from freshman Sadie Nawrocki, each assisted by senior Sarah Leyden. After Wheeling brought their lead to 14-11, Lake Erie would take the next three points with kills from freshman Allison Kirch and junior Jasmine Heyward to tie the set at 14-14. The Cardinals would grab full momentum in the set by taking eight consecutive points for a 22-14 lead. Kills from Jones and Heyward would not be enough as Wheeling would win the first set by a score of 25-16. 

The second set would see the Cardinals continuing their momentum from the first set by grabbing an early 6-2 lead. Wheeling would continue to see their lead grow to 13-6 after multiple Lake Erie miscues. The Storm would fight back to cut the Cardinals lead to 15-13 after kills from Kirch and Heyward, assisted by senior Simone Schurr, and a block by Wiley and Nawrocki. Wheeling would stop the momentum for Lake Erie by taking four of the next points, bringing the score to 19-14. Three kills from Kirch would not be enough as the Cardinals would take the second set by a score of 25-17. 

The third set would see Wheeling take the first five points of the set. Lake Erie would take the next four points with kills from Kirch and Heyward, and a block by Wiley and Jones, bringing the score to 5-4. The score would be tied at 7-7 after a solo block from redshirt freshman Rori Hanken and a kill from Heyward. The Cardinals would take seven consecutive points and would take a 14-7 lead. The Storm would fight back taking four of the next points with kills from Heyward and Kirch, cutting the lead to 15-12. Wheeling build their lead back up to 21-14 taking advantage of Lake Erie miscues. Kills from Jones and Kirch and an ace from Wiley would not be enough as the Cardinals would take the third set by a score of 25-18. 

The Storm offense was led by Kirch, posting 15 kills. Schurr would lead the team with 20 assists and Leyden would post nine. The Storm defense was led by Wiley, posting a career-high six blocks, and senior Brooklyn Broadway would lead the team with 19 digs. 

The Matchup

With the loss, Lake Erie is now 0-6 all-time against Wheeling with this year's matchup being the first since 2017.

Looking Ahead

Lake Erie will head back into G-MAC play to continue their push for the G-MAC tournament as they travel to Cedarville University on Tuesday, November 12th at 7 p.m.
