Volleyball Plays Tight Second Set; Fall to the Eagles in Straight Sets

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie volleyball finished their time at home and continued G-MAC competition with a matchup against the Ashland Eagles. The Storm would take the Eagles to extra points in the second set, but the Eagles would comfortably win in straight sets. Lake Erie moves to 1-6 in the G-MAC and 3-12 overall. 

Game Recap

The first set would begin with teams exchanging points. After a block by senior Anna Lewis and a kill from freshman Sadie Nawrocki to give the Storm a 9-8 lead, the Eagles would begin to grab momentum in the set. Ashland would win 10 of the next 12 points in the set to give themselves an 18-11 lead. The Eagles would grow their lead to 23-14. A kill by Lewis would not be enough as Ashland would win the first set by a score of 25-15. 

The second set would see the Eagles continue to carry their momentum from the first set. Ashland would begin the set by winning the first 11 points. Lake Erie would win the next seven points in the set with two aces from freshman Allison Kirch, three Eagles attack errors, and a kill from senior Katelyn McMoore, assisted by senior Simone Schurr. After a Storm attack error to give Ashland a 16-10 lead, the Storm would take the next five points with a kill and two aces from senior Alexandra Matthews and a kill from Kirch to bring the score to 16-15. Lake Erie would come all the way back to tie the set at 24-24 after an Ashland attack error and a kill from Matthews. Extra points would be needed to finish off the set. A kill by redshirt freshman Rori Hanken, a block by sophomore Kennady Wiley and Hanken, and a block by Lewis and Hanken would give the Storm a 27-26 lead. The Eagles would win four of the next five points to take the second set by a score of 30-28. 

The third set would begin with teams exchanging points. After kills from McMoore and Kirch, assisted by sophomore Jenna Sayles, to tie the set at 3-3, the Eagles would win eight of the next nine points to take an 11-4 lead. The Storm would cut the lead down 14-11 after kills by Matthews, McMoore, and freshman Gabrielle Jones, and a block by Lewis and Matthews. Ashland would take the next four points to grow their lead to 18-11. Kills from Jones and Lewis would not be enough as the Eagles would take the third set by a score of 25-17. 

The Storm offense was led by Matthews, who would have 10 kills. At the service line, Matthews and Kirch would each have two aces. Sayles would lead the team in assists with 17 and Schurr would also chip in 15. The Storm defense was led by Lewis, who had three blocks and senior Brooklyn Broadway would lead the team digs with 18. 

The Matchup

With the loss, Lake Erie has lost eight consecutives matches against Ashland, and have a 1-19 overall record against Ashland with the lone Lake Erie win coming in 2015.

Looking Ahead

Lake Erie will head back on the road to continue G-MAC competition as they take on Malone University on Friday, October 11th at 7 p.m.
