PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie football team hosted the Hillsdale College Chargers today at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium for another Great Midwest matchup. After tking the lead early, the Storm fell 28-10. Their record now sits at 2-5 and 1-4 in G-MAC play.
Game Recap
Coming off of last week's victory over Kentucky Wesleyan, the Storm looked to build off of that momentum and take down the Chargers for back-to-back wins.
Lake Erie channeled that energy and came out of the gate in a big way, scoring on just two plays to begin the game after
Alec Lewis found Keyshawn Johnson for a 74 yard play.
The Storm defense carried that same energy into their first drive and forced the Chargers into a three-and-out to force a punt and give the Lake Erie offense the ball on their own 25 yardline to start.
The offense churned out a 12 play, 53 yard drive which ended in a 39-yard field goal by
Jaffer Murphy to extend the Storm lead to 10-0 with 8:35 left in the quarter.
The Chargers scored a touchdown just before the quarter ended to cut the lead to 10-7 and neither team was able to score in the second quarter, giving Lake Erie the lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, the Chargers offense began to show some life and the scored 14 in the third and seven in the fourth resulting in a 28-10 loss for Lake Erie.
Despite the loss, the Storm defense showed that they could be a menace. They totaled five tackles for loss and
Jordan Baker collected a strip sack which was recovered 23 yards by Cam Prater.
Debonair Brown and
DeAndre Goodson led the team with nine tackles each with Brown accounting for one of the TFLs and recording one of the Storm's three pass breakups.
The Matchup
With the loss, the Storm drop their third straight contest to the Chargers. Despite the loss, they played a lot better against Hillsdale this season than they did last year. With another year of recruiting, Lake Erie is sure to give the Chargers a scare when they face them in Hillsdale next season.Â
Looking Ahead
Lake Erie will be back in action for their last road game of the season, Saturday, October 26th against Tiffin. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
