EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team hosted the Walsh Cavaliers for the first half of their four-game series today at Classic Park. The Storm would drop both games and will look to split the series on April 26th.
GAME 1
The Cavaliers came out swinging to start the two-game set, homering and tripling in the top of the first and jumping out to a 3-0 lead.
The Storm would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half, all thanks to the efforts of
Zach Hoskins who led off with a walk, stole second, stole third and advanced home on a bad throw by the Walsh catcher.
In the bottom of the second, the Storm would tally on three more and take a 4-3 lead. That lead would be short lived for the moment as Walsh tied it up during their next opportunity.
Lake Erie put up a run in each of their next two innings and took a 6-4 lead but in the fifth the Cavaliers tacked on five runs and held a 9-6 edge.
The Storm got themselves as close as 10-8 but the wheels fell off in the eighth and ninth for the bullpen, leading to a 17-8 loss in game one.
Zimba Cadiz and
Jacob Mote each finished the contest going 2-for-4 with Mote hitting a home run. The Storm stole six bases in the game and remain well on pace to break the program record for single season stolen bases.
GAME 2
With the sting of their late inning collapse still fresh, the Storm offense shifted the momentum early in game two.
Graham Solak would drive in Hoskins for their first run in the bottom of the first on a loud triple and in the next inning the Storm would tack on three more, extending their lead to 4-0.
In the top of the third, the Cavaliers would smack two home runs and trim the lead down to 4-3 before tying the game up the next inning.
Both team's bats would fall relatively quiet and the game would head into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Walsh would wake up and score four, giving them a a 8-4 lead and the eventual victory.
Cadiz and Solak each finished the game going 2-for-4 and starting pitcher
Zach Saffell finished with a solid line of 6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, and 5 K's.
The losses take the Storm's overall record to 4-25 with a 3-11 record in conference play. They will be back in action on April 15th and 16th on the road to face the Hillsdale Chargers in a four-game set.
