Bats Come Alive As Softball Completes First Conference Sweep of the Season at Ursuline

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — The Lake Erie softball team traveled to Ursuline College to take on the Arrows for a conference doubleheader. The Storm were triumphant for the day, taking both games and earning two conference wins. The Storm finished with 21 total hits for both games, with zero errors. Lake Erie advances to a 3-11 conference record and an 8-22 overall record.

GAME 1

The first game was overrun by Storm hits. Sophomore Arianna Tammaro started off the Storm's reign in the second inning, with a single to cash in two runs off an Arrow error. Both sophomore Emma Spahr and junior Adrianna Sluga were able to score, giving the Storm a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Sluga reached first base off of another Arrow error, giving sophomore Emma Morris the go for home plate. Soon after, Spahr hit her second homer for her career, gaining two RBI's with Sluga on base. Up 5-0 in the sixth inning, the Storm was not done scoring. Sophomore CJ Garcia singled, pushing everyone on base to the next while sending Tammaro home. To end the game on a high note, sophomore Jasmine Gonzales singled to earn two RBIs, as freshman Lillian Campbell and senior Dani Soria both scored.

Senior Grace Hammer started off the doubleheader on the mound. Hammer threw six strikeouts, up one more than both of Ursuline's pitchers. Hammer now has 120 for the season.

Soria finished the game with three hits, with Tammaro right behind with two. Both Gonzales and Spahr earned two RBIs each.

GAME 2

With no runs from either team for the first three innings, the Storm ended the drought. Garcia homered in the fourth inning to put Lake Erie on the board. Garcia now has four career home runs. Gonzales kept it going with a double to center field, sending junior Jordyn Hawkins home for the Storm's second run. Sophomore Rachel Varga then singled to center field to send Gonzales home. Soon after, Soria was hit by a pitch to advance everyone on base, including Varga at third for another run. The Storm was then up 4-0. Ursuline was able to score one in the bottom of the fourth, but the run was quickly matched by the Storm in the fifth. Varga recorded another single to send senior Carly Rowland home, making it 5-1 for the Storm. The Storm grew their lead in the sixth inning, after Rowland reached first on an error that would send Tammaro home. Gonzales then doubled to record an RBI with Garcia's score. The Arrows responded with another run in the bottom of the sixth, but a quiet seventh inning for both teams gave Lake Erie the 7-2 win.

Rowland pitched for the entirety of the second game, recording four strikeouts. Rowland now has 60 for the year.

Garcia and Gonzales both recorded three hits, followed by Tammaro and Varga with two hits each. Gonzales and Varga also both had two RBIs.

The Storm continue their road games on Saturday, April 15th at Malone to face the Pioneers for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
