CLERMONT, Flo. – The Lake Erie College softball team continued their competition in THE Spring Games today, March 9th against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats and the Millersville Marauders after an off day yesterday. They would drop both games again bon the day with scores of 2-0 and 1-0.
GAME 1 - vs West Virginia Wesleyan
Storm pitching had another great outing in the first contest of the day. Carly Rowland got the start in the circle and pitched six strong innings, surrendering five hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Unfortunately, the Lake Erie bats were quiet today as they struggled with their timing. Freshman Lillian Campell earned the lone hit for the Storm with a single in the top of the fifth.
The Bobcats managed to put together two runs in the game, giving them all they would need as the game ended with a 2-0 final score.
GAME 2 - vs Millersville
Lake Erie built on their offensive improvement this game by looking much better at the plate, having quality at-bats, and reducing their number of strikeouts.
One Storm athlete that didn't reduce her number of strikeouts, however, was starting pitcher Grace Hammer. Hammer had another fantastic outing in the circle, striking out twelve batters in seven innings of work. This marks the 10th double-digit strikeout performance of her career. With this milestone, she now accounts for 10 of the last 16 double-digit strikeout appearances for a Storm pitcher since 2000.
Millersville capitalized on two Lake Erie errors in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the 7th, the Storm would have an exciting opportunity to tie things up when Rachel Varga smoked a pitch that was fielded and thrown out of play, thereby placing her at second base with two outs. Unfortunately, Lake Erie was unable to bring her home and the game ended with the Marauders on top.
The Storm will be back in action tomorrow March 10th for the final two games of THE Spring Games where they will take on Felician University and the College of Saint Rose.
