Baseball Secures First Win Over Hawks

MURFEESBORO, North Carolina — The Lake Erie baseball team continued their stretch of road games, taking on the Chowan University Hawks for a single nine inning game. The Storm were victorious over the Hawks in a 10-3 win. This first win of the season brings the Storm to 1-10 overall as the season looks up.

The Storm scoring began in the second inning, with sophomore Israel Espinosa reaching first base on a fielder's choice, which brought freshman Hagan Hejduk home. The second run came from junior Mark Ross after a Hawk short stop error. Chowan was able to tie things up in the third inning, and even took a lead of 3-2. Espinosa singled in the fourth inning to send Ross and freshman Ty Sowers home, taking the 4-3 lead. Sophomore Sebastian Silva singled shortly after in the fourth, to send junior Justin Major home to make it 5-3.

With a 5-3 lead throughout the next few innings, the Storm struck again in the eighth. Espinosa hit another single to third base with the bases loaded, sending Hejduk home. Right after, freshman Zimba Cadiz advanced to first off a walk, sending Ross home. Bases still loaded, Silva was hit by a pitch to have Major advance to home, giving the Storm an 8-3 lead. Junior Josue Cruz finished up the eighth inning with a fly ball to right field, which gave Espinosa a clear path to home plate.

Up 9-3 in the ninth inning, Major singled to center field, which sent Hejduk home giving the Storm the 10-3 win. Espinosa finished the day with four RBIs, two hits, and one run. Hejduk and Ross finished with three runs each.

Senior Jon Poppy threw seven strikeouts for the Storm, throwing one more than the Hawks' starting pitcher.

The Storm head to the University of North Carolina, Pembroke on Tuesday March 7th for a double header against the Braves.
