MENTOR, Ohio — The Lake Erie softball team hosted the Cedarville Yellow Jackets for their double header home opener. Due to weather, the game was hosted at Mentor High School. Both games resulted in wins for Cedarville, with a close second game of 4-3. The Storm move to a 5-13 overall record, looking to turn things around in their next matchup.
GAME 1
The first four innings were silent for both teams, as the game remained scoreless. The Storm were the first on the board in the fifth inning, after sophomore Arianna Tammaro doubled down the right field line, allowing junior Bridget Mullholand to score. Lake Erie was able to score again off of a Yellow Jacket error, giving sophomore Emma Morris the green light home. The Storm took a 2-0 lead, before Cedarville made a comeback. The Yellow Jackets were quick to respond in the sixth, after numerous hits and home runs gave them the 11-2 win.
Senior Grace Hammer started off on the mound for the Storm, throwing five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Senior Carly Rowland stepped in in the fifth inning and recorded a strikeout.
GAME 2
Sophomore Emma Spahr was the Storm's next pitcher for the day. Pitching all seven innings, Spahr recorded two strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets were the first to score in the second game. Down one going into the third inning, sophomore Maddie Pawlak singled to right field to send sophomore Adrianna Sluga home to tie it up at 1-1. The fourth inning went in Cedarville's favor, after a homerun gave them the lead at 3-1. After the Yellow Jackets scored again in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead, the Storm would go out swinging. Sophomore Brynn Gillen hit a double to left field, which would result in both Sluga and Morris scoring. However, it was not enough to tie it up, as the final out of the seventh left it at 4-3 Cedarville.
Lake Erie is back at Mentor High School to host the Northwood Timberwolves on Sunday, March 26th for a doubleheader set for 1:00 & 3:00 PM.
