ERIE, Pennsylvania — The Lake Erie women's softball team returned to their regular season play after THE Spring Games in Florida. The Storm traveled to Mercyhurst University to face the Lakers in a doubleheader, where they would drop both games, with the first game ending 1-7, and the second in a close 2-3. he Storm now sit at a 5-11 overall record.
Game 1
Senior pitcher Grace Hammer started off at the mound for the Storm, pitching in every inning. Putting up a fight with a strikeout, the Lakers were able to get away with six runs throughout the first five innings.
The Storm had a late effort in the sixth inning to turn things around. Sophomore Emma Spahr singled, which allowed sophomore Adrianna Sluga and sophomore Rachel Varga to advance, sending junior Ava Scott home. Spahr earned her third RBI of the season. The Lakers snuck in another run before the end, giving them the 7-1 win over the Storm.
Game 2
Senior pitcher Carly Rowland was the Storm's next pitcher up. Rowland recorded five strikeouts, allowing only three runs.
Mercyhurst took an early 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning. The next four innings were quiet for both teams, with no hits or runs.
The sixth inning brought Lake Erie back into the game. Junior Bridget Mullholand doubled to left center with two on base, sending both sophomore Emma Morris and Ava Scott home. Mullholand cashed in to RBI's, totaling two for the season. Now up 2-1, the Storm had to fight. However, the Lakers were not done with the sixth inning, scoring two runs of their own to take the lead again at 3-2.
Lake Erie recorded one hit in the seventh to try and tie it up, but the inning finished out, giving Mercyhurst the 3-2 win.
Due to weather related occurrences, the Lake Erie softball doubleheader event scheduled for Saturday, March 25th against Cedarville at home has been moved up. The Storm will now play on Wednesday, March 22nd starting at 2:00 PM, at Mentor High School located in Mentor, Ohio.
