PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The 2023 Lake Erie College Storm football team were back in action at home, Saturday October 14, for their second to last home contest. The Storm were unable to get any momentum going and would fall 50-0. Bringing their current record to 1-6 and 0-5 in conference play.
Lake Erie was without some of their key players on both sides of the ball in today's contest. Jovohn Tucker, the team's leading receiver on the year, could not go today after an impressive performance last week. Another key talent out for the Storm was defensive leader Jorge Sanchez. The Storm were also without the services of their starting running back, Raphael Jones Jr.
Lake Erie and would go into the half down 29-0. The Storm's defense would hold the Dragons explosive offense to just six points in the third quarter, a move in a positive direction compared to the first half of the contest. Kicker Ian Scannell, who had connected on a 48 yard field goal that would have given him the record for the second longest field goal made in Storm history. It was negated by an LEC penalty that resulted in a punt rather than a 52-yard try by Scannell.
The leaders on the day for the Lake Erie offense were Xeavier Bullock, Corey Polk, and Keed Kpoto. Bullock would end the day completing 6 of a possible 17 attempts through the air. He finished with 49 yards, a QBR of 59.5, and a long of 15 yards. Bullock ended with a team high 18 rushing attempts good for 40 yards. Bullock closed the game with 89 all purpose yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. Corey Polk added eight rushing attempts for 22 yards. Kpoto concluded with six rushing attempts good for 17 yards on the ground. He also finished with one reception for six yards.
Lake Erie's defense was led by cornerbacks Ronnell Lackey, and Euvoski Cunningham. Lackey finished with an impressive game high, nine total tackles, five of which were solo tackles. Cunningham also added eight total tackles as well, which was the second highest mark of the game. The cornerback recorded an incredible seven out of his eight tackles, solo, and a pass break up. Carter Kilroy added three solo tackles, six total, a four yard tackle for loss, and a assist on a sack. Lyncoy Reynaud, Cameron Webb, and Phillip Hawkins all recorded one sack each during the contest.
The Storm look to have short memories this week and bounce back when they return to action next Saturday, October 21, as they travel to Ashland, Ohio, for another G-MAC conference matchup against the 4-3 Ashland University Eagles . Kickoff starts at 1 PM.
