Box Score (PAINESVILLE, Ohio) -- The Lake Erie women's soccer team won its 2022 season opener against the Purdue Northwest Pride 2-1 at home. This win brings the Storm to a 1-0-0 record and the Pride at 0-1-0.
The first half had a slow start for both teams, with first goal scored, unassisted, by Storm sophmore Jillian Newlan at 30:24. This gave the Storm the lead going into halftime, 1-0. Jillian Newman picked up right where she left off, being the 2021 Lake Erie College Freshman of the Year.
The second half picked up with goals from both teams, two yellow cards, and a red card. The yellow cards were given to a Pride player and coach, and the red to the Pride's goalie, forcing a substitution. The new goalie worked in the Storm's favor, with freshman Ainsley McKenzie shooting the ball into the net, unassisted, at 74:03. This brought the Storm to a 2-0 lead. The Pride responded with a goal toward the end at 89:08, finalizing the score at 2-1.
Goalie Megan Biddell recorded three saves, guarding the net the entire 90 minutes. The Storm and the Pride matched in shots, with both recoding six each.
The Storm will take on the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Wednesday, August 31 on the road.
