Storm Upset #1 Saginaw Valley | Advance to Sweet Sixteen

Box Score

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Lake Erie College Storm men's soccer team faced off against the #1 seeded Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in the Round of 32 during the 2022 NCAA DII Men's Soccer tournament on November 13. Lake Erie would take down the Cardinals after outsourcing them 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Saginaw Valley would strike first in the match, scoring in the 16th minute on an assisted goal.

The #8 seeded Storm would fight hard against the Cardinals in the remainder of the first half but would go into the locker room at the half, down 1-0.

The sixteen-minute mark in the second half would produce the game's second goal, this time in favor of Lake Erie when Tomas Fernadez would find Connor Mautino to tie the game.

Neither team would manage to score again in regulation, sending the game to two overtime periods where neither team would score and resulting in the Storm's season coming down to penalty kicks for the second season in a row.

Penalty kicks did not start well for the Storm as Saginaw Valley would make their first two shots with Lake Erie missing their first two. Ben Wiemann would fake out the Cardinals goalkeeper to chip in the first goal for the Storm and Tom Akinola would make the second one. With Saginaw Valley missing their third shot and Tomas Wroblewski saving the fourth, the game would come down to each team's next shot. Wroblewski would make another fantastic save and Lake Erie would send up Fabian Kiessetz who would nail the shot and send the Storm home with a victory.

The Storm now move on to the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight year where they will face #5 Illinois Springfield.
