Storm Take Down the Arrows at Home

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Storm women's volleyball returned to their home court after several road matches to host the Ursuline Arrows. The Arrows were able to take a set from the Storm, but the Storm took the match in four sets. The Storm rise to a 3-24 record heading into the end of their season.

Senior Kariema Rodriguez-Diaz started the night off with a kill, initiating her comeback after time off due to an injury. The Storm and the Arrows stayed fairly matched up throughout the set, with multiple tied scores. Junior Schylar Shepherd, senior Dora Olah, freshman Jessica Ickes, and senior Maria Blatnik also put down kills for the Storm early in the first set. At a 17-17 tie, the Storm began to pull ahead. Senior Taylor Metzler led a three point run for the Storm, with the help of a block from Rodriguez-Diaz and a kill from Blatnik. The Arrows fought back to tie it up at 22-22, before Rodriguez-Diaz put down another kill for the Storm. The points went back and forth, until the Storm took the set 26-24 from Arrow errors. 

The Arrows started off the second match with momentum, taking an early 5-0 lead. They were able to grow their lead to 10-2, forcing the Storm to fight. Sophomore Sarah Leyden would then go on a short run started by a kill from sophomore Simone Schurr and an Arrow error. In Leyden's run, Ickes recorded four blocks, split up by a kill. The Storm were down 8-10 going in the middle of the set. The Storm were able to respond with kills from Shepherd and Rodriguez-Diaz, mixed with Arrow errors to tie it up 24-24 after being down most of the set. The Arrows were able to take the set 26-24 off of a kill and a service ace. 

With a 1-1 tie in sets, the Storm was ready to battle. At a 2-2 score, a kill from Shepherd started a five point run with Rodriguez-Diaz at the service line. The Storm took a ten point lead at 13-3, from exceptional offense and Arrow errors. The Arrows tried to find an answer, but the Storm kept their kills strong, with senior Jordan Taylor putting down a kill for set point, 25-12. 

The Storm kept the energy from the third set alive going into the fourth. Rodriguez-Diaz went on an early 5-0 run for the Storm. An Arrows kill ended the run, but soon after Shepherd would go on a run of her own to help the Storm grow an 11-1 lead. Within that run, Olah put away three Storm kills. The fourth set continued to be controlled by Storm runs, as Leyden went on a six point run to give the Storm an even larger lead of 18-3. Junior Alana Stevens made her first season appearance for the Storm, playing defense for the Storm. The Arrows had little response, and the Storm took the match winning set from a kill by Ickes, 25-14. 

Schurr put up 18 assists for the match. Olah led the Storm in offense with nine kills, and Metzler led the Storm in defense with 17 digs. 

The Storm will host the Findlay Oilers on Saturday, November 5th for their final GMAC regular season match at 1:00 PM.
