Box Score CANTON, Ohio — The Storm women's volleyball team traveled to Malone University to take on the Pioneers. The Storm battled with the Pioneers taking the first set, but fell in the next three. The Storm moves to a 2-24 record finishing their regular season road games.
Senior Jordan Taylor started the Storm off with a kill in the first set. Junior Alexandra Matthews put up a block soon after to keep the Storm going. The Storm and the Pioneers battled, with a close score throughout the set. Senior Dora Olah and freshman Jessica Ickes started the match with strong offense as well, putting away several kills. The Storm took a 10-6 lead over the Pioneers, led by sophomore Sarah Leyden on the service line. The Pioneers tried to fight back with a short run, but the Storm took the first set 25-21 after Taylor put down a kill and a service ace.
Olah started the second set with three kills for the Storm. At a 6-6 tie, the Pioneers pulled ahead with a short run, ended by a kill from senior Maria Blatnik. The score stayed tight, but the Pioneers were able to grow their lead to 24-16. The Storm kept fighting, with another kill from Blatnik and an ace from sophomore Simone Schurr. The Storm were unable to tie it back up, as the Pioneers took the second set 24-19.
With a split 1-1 in sets, the Pioneers pulled ahead early at 6-2. Junior Schylar Shepherd ended the Pioneers' run with a Storm kill. The Storm continued to close the gap in the score, but the Pioneers went on another run to give them a 16-10 lead. Going into the end of the set, senior Kaylee Hiser led a Storm run to bring it to 19-20, Storm down by one. The Pioneers stayed solid, as kills from Taylor, Blatnik, and Shepherd could not bring the Storm back, giving the Pioneers the 25-23 set win.
The Storm and Pioneers continued to battle throughout the fourth set. At a tied score of 16-16, the Pioneers put away a pair of kills to take a small lead. Matthews and Ickes tried to fight for the Storm with kills at the end, but the Pioneers took the match winning set 25-21.
Leyden recorded 22 assists for the Storm, and Schurr finished with 20. Blatnik led the Storm with 13 kills. Senior Taylor Metzler picked up 15 digs as the Storm's libero.
The Storm return to their home court on Tuesday, November 1st to host the Ursuline Arrows at 6:00 PM.
