Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio — The Storm women's volleyball team traveled to Walsh University to take on the Cavaliers. The Storm took the first set from the Cavaliers, but dropped the next three. The team moves to a 2-23 record, heading into the end of their GMAC play.
The Storm drew a three point lead in the first set, with help from an ace from sophomore Simone Schurr. The Cavaliers quickly came back, and took a 9-5 lead. Junior Alexandra Matthews started the Storm offense with a kill, with senior Jordan Taylor putting down a kill soon after. The Cavaliers held a 17-11 lead over the Storm going into the end of the set, but the Storm were not done fighting. A Cavalier service error started a five point run for the Storm, with junior Katelyn McMoore at the service line. Back to back kills from Matthews and senior Maria Blatnik helped the Storm tie up the score at 18-18. Freshman Jessica Ickes kept it going with a solo block. The Cavaliers tried to combat with a kill, but the Storm shut it down with a six point run led by senior Kaylee Hiser. The Storm took the first set 25-19 with kills from Taylor and Blatnik, along with Cavalier errors.
The Storm and the Cavaliers battled in the second set, with an early tie at 4-4. The Storm grew a 13-9 lead before the Cavaliers came back. At a 14-14 tied score, the Cavaliers went on back to back short runs to pull ahead 20-16. Senior Dora Olah tried to fight back with some kills, but the Cavaliers took the second set 25-17.
The third set was led by the Cavaliers, taking an early 4-0 lead. Taylor, Olah, and Matthews each put away a kill for the Storm, but the Cavaliers took the set 25-5.
With the Cavaliers up 2-1 in sets, the Storm tried to make a comeback. Schurr put away a kill for the Storm's first point at 1-5. The Cavaliers continued to go on runs, with responses from Blatnik, Taylor, Olah, and Matthews putting away Storm kills. The Cavaliers had a 23-11 lead going into the end of the set, with a kill from Schurr and Blatnik trying to combat. The Storm could not come back, as the Cavaliers took the match winning set 25-12.
Schurr finished the match with 11 assists for the Storm, followed by sophomore Sarah Leyden with eight. Blatnik and Olah led the Storm in kills, recording eight each. Senior Taylor Metzler picked up 13 digs as the Storm's libero.
The Storm head to Malone to take on the Pioneers on Saturday, October 29th at 1:00 PM for another GMAC match.
