Storm Finish Midwest Region Conference Play

HAMMOND, Indiana – The Storm women's volleyball team played two more matches in the Midwest Region Crossover, taking on the Truman Bulldogs and the Purdue Northwest Pride. The Storm battled it out, but dropped both matches, 0-3 in sets. The Storm now sit at a 2-19 record. 

Match 1 vs. Truman 

The Storm and the Bulldogs both came into the match with strong offense. Senior Dora Olah put away her first kill of the match at 1-1. The score was close at 5-6 with the Storm trailing by one. The Bulldogs went on a run to grow a 10-5 lead. Senior Jordan Taylor and freshman Jessica Ickes ended the run with a block. The Storm kept fighting, with a kill from senior Maria Blatnik. The Bulldogs however held their lead to make it 15-9. Junior Katelyn McMoore and Taylor put away back to back kills for the Storm to keep them in action. Both teams stayed competitive, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead with several runs off Storm errors and Bulldog kills to give them the first set, 25-18.

The second set started competitive, with an early 6-6 tie score. Senior Taylor Metzler recorded two service aces for the Storm, before the Bulldogs pulled ahead at 10-7. The Storm fought on with kills from Blatnik, Ickes, Taylor, and Olah, but the Bulldogs held their lead. The Bulldogs took the second set 25-17 with strong offense and Storm errors. 

The third set started with a Storm kill from McMoore. The Storm fought hard and grew a 7-4 lead after several kills from junior Peyton Lemmer, Ickes, Olah, and Taylor. The Bulldogs responded with some service aces mixed with Storm errors to take a 10-8 lead. The Storm stayed in it, but could not pull back. Sophomore libero Brooklyn Broadway tried with a service ace at 16-19, but the Bulldogs took the match winning set 25-17. 

Sophomore setter Sarah Leyden tallied 12 assists. Broadway picked up eight digs, and Taylor led the Storm in kills with eight. 

Match 2 vs. Purdue Northwest 

The Storm and the Pride matched up well in the first set with an early 3-3 tie. Junior Anna Lewis put away her first kill of the match early, along with Olah recording a kill. The Pride began to pull away after a five point run to give them a 9-4 lead. Lemmer ended the run with a Storm kill. Senior Kaylee Hiser went on a run for the Storm to bring them to a two point deficit at 10-12. The Pride fought back with another run, and took a 20-11 lead. The Storm tried to fight back with kills from Lemmer and Olah, but the Pride took the first set 25-16. 

The second set started with three kills from Olah to get the Storm in action. The Pride answered with some kills, as the score remained close. The score was tied multiple times, up until 15-15. The Pride took a lead after a pair of Storm errors. Matthews and Blatnik put away some kills, but the Pride fought on to grow a 23-19 lead. Olah tried to bring the Storm back with a kill, but the Pride took the second set 25-21. 

The Pride started the third set with a four point run over the Storm. Matthews put down a kill for the Storm, but the Pride took a 12-3 lead after some kills and Storm errors. The Storm tried to bring it back with multiple kills from Blatnik, Taylor, and Olah, but the Pride took the match winning set 25-15. 

Sophomore setter Simone Schurr recorded 11 assists for the Storm. Blatnik had nine kills leading the team in offense, and Hiser picked up 12 digs. 

The Storm return to GMAC competition on the road on Tuesday, October 18th against the Ursuline Arrows at 6:00 PM.
