Box Score On a frigid January evening in Painesville, the Lake Erie women's basketball team had a tough task in front of them in the form of the nationally ranked and Great Midwest Athletic Conference leading Ashland Eagles. Coach Mackenzie Perttu's team gave the Eagles all they could handle, but the Storm would fall by a score of 94-64.
Undaunted by the tough competition, the Storm were able to keep it close in the first quarter behind strong play from Lainey Billing and Breanna Bauer. However, the Eagles would maintain a 17-10 lead going into the second quarter.
The second period would see the Eagles begin to pull away despite some effective defensive play from the Storm frontcourt, namely Alexis Lehmkuhl and Shalaya Heath. However, some foul and turnover problems would plague the Lake Erie comeback effort, and the contest would enter the halftime break at 45 to 25 favoring the Eagles.
The third quarter would see Lake Erie attempt to close the gap on Ashland, however the Eagles offensive prowess was simply too much to handle for the Storm. Abby Matalavage would be the highlight of the third as she added 7 points, 2 rebounds and a steal in the quarter. The third period would end with a score of 66 to 46, again favoring the Eagles.
Unfortunately for the Storm, the final period was more of the same as the Eagles maintained their control on the game. The contest would conclude at 94 to 64.
Despite the loss, the Storm certainly had some bright spots. Lainey Billing would lead the way with 14 points, and Breanna Bauer would add 13 points and 5 rebounds.
The Storm return to action on January 29th when they travel to Tiffin for a 1 pm tipoff.
