Box Score (PAINESVILLE, Ohio) - The Lake Erie (5-3 G-MAC) men's soccer team was defeated by Cedarville (6-1-1 G-MAC), 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville.
Shots were 6-2 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, who took four corner kicks compared to the one by the Storm in the first half. The Lake Erie defense contested just enough that both teams went into the intermission break scoreless.
Despite being outshot, Lake Erie was first on the scoreboard thanks to a goal by sophomore forward Alex Saggese from a perfectly passed ball from Arthur Lucas in the 54th minute of the match.
Although trailing, Cedarville continued to be the aggressor offensively and gained full momentum of the match by scoring three straight goals in less than five minutes. Sophomore forward Ayden Von Essen attempted to cut the Yellow Jacket lead in the 73rd minute but the chance was denied by the Cedarville goalkeeper.
The Yellow Jackets attempted 16 total shots of their 22 in the second half, while the Storm closed out the game with a total of five shots.
Tom John received the loss in the net and finished with a total of six saves from nine shots on goal.
Prior to the start of the match, the Storm recognized the accomplishments and achievements of two players Michael Barish and Cole Richards. Barish and Richards were joined by their family members while walking in front of fans and their teammates as they celebrated Senior Day.
Lake Erie has now finished the delayed 2020-21 regular season and is currently ranked third in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) standings. The Storm have clinched a seed in the G-MAC Championship tournament and will host the first-round quarterfinal match on Saturday, April 24. Final seedings to the championship tournament have not been announced.
