Box Score (CANTON, Ohio) — On a rainy Thursday afternoon in Canton, the Lake Erie women's soccer team lost to Malone, 2-1. The loss drops the Storm to 0-2 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 2-1.
The majority of the action in this one occurred in the second half, as both teams headed to the halftime locker room locked in a scoreless tie. Sophomore goalie Megan Biddell kept the Pioneers off the board through the first 45 minutes of play, saving three shot attempts.
But as soon as the second half began, it was a scoring frenzy. Between the 48th and 63rd minute, three goals were scored. The first came on a shot by Malone's Natalie Martorana, assisted by Amanda Kinsey. The Storm responded with a goal of their own in the 54th minute, coming off the foot of senior defender Emily Scheppner. However, Malone would answer back in the 63rd minute, when Keeley Malley scored on a penalty kick attempt.
In total, Malone had triple the shot attempts of Lake Erie, 9-3. But despite that, the Storm battled and kept the game as close as possible, with the only difference on the scoreboard coming on the Malone penalty shot.
Lake Erie had triple the corner kicks of Malone, 6-2, but were unable to capitalize on those scoring opportunities deep within Pioneer territory.
The Storm now travel back home, to prepare for a Saturday matchup with visiting Ohio Valley. That game will kick off at 4:00 p.m. EST.
