Box Score The Lake Erie College women's basketball team came tantalizingly close to defeating Cedarville on Saturday, losing by a score of 58-55. The win would have been the first for the Storm on the season, while the visiting Yellow Jackets improved to 11-1 with the victory.
The top story from the affair on the Lake Erie side comes in the dazzling play of sophomore guard Sydney Wyndgarden. The Hilliard, Ohio native finished with an impressive 21 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks in almost 38 minutes, helping to keep the game neck-and-neck for the full four quarters. Junior guard Lainey Billing contributed 14 rebounds of her own as Lake Erie didn't allow Cedarville to get comfortable all day.
The one-loss Yellow Jackets came into the Jerome T. Osborne Athletic Center and were held to 18-66 shooting, including a mere 8-29 from three-point range. The Storm also won the rebound battle over Cedarville, grabbing 65 total boards to the Yellow Jackets' 38. Additionally, Lake Erie only missed four free throw attempts to Cedarville's 10.
With a total of 16 lead changes and 13 times that the score was tied, it was evident early on that this game could end up going down to the wire. And that's exactly what it did, with Cedarville taking a three-point lead with less than a minute to play. The Storm would get an attempt to tie things up at 58 in the waning seconds of the contest, but the shot attempt did not fall, and Cedarville squeaked out of Painesville with the victory.
With such a great effort against one of the premier teams in the G-MAC, Storm head coach Mackenzie Perttu's bunch looks to finally get over the hump and into the win column Monday, when they swap venues with the Yellow Jackets and head down to Cedarville for a rematch. That contest is set to start at 5:00.
