Storm Stung In Overtime By Cedarville

Box Score

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – It was deja vu for Lake Erie as it fell to Cedarville 98-91 in a barnburner at the Osborne Center Saturday afternoon. In both games this season, the Yellow Jackets (16-8, 11-3) hit 3-pointers as time was winding down to stun the Storm (14-11, 8-7) before going ahead in overtime.

This time it was Branden Maughmer who hit a triple from the left wing as time expired. After both teams exchanged the first two baskets in overtime, the Yellow Jackets went ahead for good on another Maughmer trey.

The defeat erased an impressive effort for Lake Erie that saw all five starters scored in double figures. Gabe Kynard (Sr., Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) led the charge with 27 points. He was spectacular all over the floor as he dished out five assists, swiped five balls, and pulled down four rebounds. He was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and is now one free throw shy from tying the program record for most in a single season set back during the Storm's first season by Melvin Selmon.

Jacob Plantz (Fr., Genoa, Ohio / Genoa) also had a strong game with 18 points on 6-of-12 from the field. He was two boards shy of a double-double and added three assists.

Kaleb Vaughn (R-Sr., Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) added 14, while Harrison Riggs (Jr., Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) and Kevin Peterson (So., Cleveland, Ohio / Padua) both chipped in 11.

The Storm shot 50% from the field, but saw Cedarville do slightly better with a 60% mark. Maughmer led the team with 26 points. Isaiah Speelman came off the bench to score 21.

Lake Erie is back in action Thursday against the conference leader Findlay. Tip-off with the Oilers is set for 7 p.m.
