Storm Second Half Comeback Falls Short Against Ky. Wesleyan

Box Score

(Painesville, Ohio) - Looking to make a late-game run and an upset bid, the Lake Erie women's basketball team suffered a setback with a 65-57 home loss to Kentucky Wesleyan in Saturday's conference matchup.

Coming into the match the Panthers held a league-best record of 11-1 and extended their winning record following a 15 point performance by forward Keelie Lamb. Lake Erie now 5-6 in the conference did not go away quietly cutting the lead as low as one point late in the game.

Both teams started out the game with a sense of urgency and they both equally matched each others toughness around the painted area. Minutes into the second quarter, freshman guard Lauren Flannery drilled a three-point basket that brought the Storm within three. It appeared the momentum was turning in Lake Erie's favor as Josie Chaddock was able to steal the ball on a bad pass and was able to drive and finish for a fastbreak layup. The next possession Chaddock capitalized on an assist from senior guard Ashley West and drained a three that brought the score to 35-30. A foul before the halftime break sent Kentucky Wesleyan to the line and both teams went into the locker room with a score of 37-30.

Foul trouble began to limit the Storm defense from applying defensive pressure as the Panthers began to pull away in the third. Entering the fourth quarter Chaddock, Flannery, and Breanna Bauer each had four fouls apiece.

Chaddock was able to strike twice late in the match hitting another open three and a jump shot on back-to-back possessions cutting the Panther lead to 51-50. Flannery gave the Storm a final push towards victory hitting a jump shot and upping the score to 62-57. The Panthers would end up securing the win at the free-throw line after only making 14 out of 23 attempts.

West finished the game with a double-double for the Storm scoring ten points and battled for 12 rebounds. Baur led all players in scoring with 18 points after shooting 8-9 from the field.

The Storm will be on the road Thursday for a matchup against Ohio Dominican. Tip-off against the Panthers is scheduled for 7:30.
