Kynard Breaks All-Time Scoring Record In Win vs. AB

Box Score

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – More history was made on Monday evening as Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) set Lake Erie's all-time scoring record in a 69-64 victory over Alderson Broaddus. The 6-1 senior guard scored 15 of the Storm's final 19 points in the final seven minutes of play to give the hosts a come-from-behind victory.

The milestone came quietly as Lake Erie trailed by six with 3:58 to go and Kynard sank a pair of free throws to make the score 59-55.

"I can't really take credit for all of it myself. The people I started the program with, we started 4-24. We told ourselves we have a lot of work to do to be where we wanted to be," Kynard said reflecting on his four years with the Storm. "So we were in the gym, summers, springs, falls, everything, just working to get better. So some of the credit can go to myself, but I'm nothing without my teammates who push me to become who I am.

"I didn't (have any idea of the record) before the last game, but everyone started telling me and it popped in my head a few times," Kynard said of in-game thoughts of breaking the mark. "I never pictured this coming in. Coach Conley said the same thing. It's self-made. It's teammate-made. I didn't picture this moment occurring ever in my career."

His next points would be a bit more animated.

After both teams exchanged layups, Kynard drove the lane on the right side and was fouled hard taking him to the protective padding along the wall, but the shot went in and the and-1 opportunity did as well to bring the Storm within one.

The Battlers missed a 3-pointer on its next trip and allowed almost an instant replay situation to occur as Kynard drove down the lane, get fouled on a layup, and made the resulting free throw once again, this time to give Lake Erie the lead for good at 63-61.

Of course, Kynard wasn't the only contributor in a hard-fought defensive battle. Kevin Peterson (So., Cleveland, Ohio / Padua) and Ennis Thomas added 11 points each. Jacob Plantz (Fr., Genoa, Ohio / Genoa) fought for nine rebounds to match AB's Malik Bocook for game-high honors.

"We knew coming in, record aside, they were a good team," added Kynard. "We expected a battle. We expected a good game out of them. We got there late in the game and it was what we had prepared for. It was a good game. The ball bounced my way, it just happened to fall in, and we pulled through."

The Storm improved to 8-4 overall and 3-1 to close the first stretch of G-MAC play. The Battlers fell to 1-9 and 0-3 in the same categories.

Lake Erie will now prep for a tough non-conference clash with Le Moyne. Tip-off with the Dolphins is set for Friday at 7 p.m.
