Storm Fall Short In Inaugural Pride and Passion Game

Box Score

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – The first Pride and Passion Game didn't go as well as Lake Erie had hoped as it fell 21-6 to Walsh on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium. The Storm (1-4, 1-2) drove down the field on their first drive for the first score of the game, but the Cavaliers (1-4, 1-2) added touchdowns in the final three frames while using time of possession to their advantage and shutting out the hosts the rest of the way.

After stopping the visitors on their the opening drive thanks to a Tareeq Welch (Tampa, Fla.) interception, the Storm started out much like they finished last week's game and drove 93 yards resulting capped by a Javarian Smith (Pontiac, Mich.) touchdown pass. This time he found Josh Hufstetler (North Olmsted, Ohio) on a slant up the middle for a 40 yard strike. A blocked PAT left the score at 6-0 through the first quarter of play.

Walsh got on the board midway through the second quarter chewing up clock in a sign of things to come. Using a short field, it took the Cavaliers 10 plays to go 51 yards using a new option offense to take a 7-6 lead.

The Cavaliers rushed the ball every play on the drive and nearly did in the game. All but eight offensive plays were runs totaling 299 yards.

The Storm's offense was effective through the air as the wide receivers often were able to get past the Walsh secondary. Smith finished the game 18-for-30 with 299 yards passing, but the visitors were able to force three turnovers in the second half and blocked a punt for a touchdown to seal halt any Lake Erie momentum.

Hufstetler was the leading receiver for the Green and White with six catches for 131 yards. Nate Dantley Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) added five receptions and was just shy of the century mark with 94 yards.

Defensively Carlo Marcellino (Eastlake, Ohio) led the Storm with 14 tackles against his former team. Thoams Covington (Tampa, Fla.) and Elems Ukwu Jr. (Landover, Md.) both added eight.

The Storm will be on the road the next two weeks with a pair of out-of-state contests. The first of those will be in the Mountain State with a noon kickoff at Alderson Broaddus. Coverage will be available on the Great Midwest Digital Network.
