Storm Stings Yellow Jackets in Overtime

Box Score

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – Lake Erie overtime a 12-point deficit with 10 minutes left in the game to come back and defeat Cedarville 91-87 in an overtime thriller Thursday evening. The Storm (9-6, 4-3) have now found themselves winners of three-straight, while the Yellow Jackets (8-8, 5-3) have dipped in their last two.

The outside shot was pivotal throughout the entire game for both teams as they evenly split a combined 26 3-pointers. In the first half, it was Cedarville that was hot from distance as the visitors made 9-of-15 en route to a 40-35 lead at the break. The Storm fought back and stayed steady with six and five triples in the first and second, respectively, while the Jackets went cold with a 3-for-12 mark from range in the second.

The Storm added two more in overtime, and they couldn't have come at a better moment. After the Yellow Jackets forced the extra period with a last-second layup, the visitors held the early lead until Brogan Scott drained a game-tying bonus bomb with 1:36 to go to knot things up at 80-80. After a steal by Erron James, Jordan Humphrey drained the go-ahead trey 25 seconds later.

The lead stayed in favor of the Green and White the rest of the way.

Gabe Kynard led the way with a game-high 24 points and was a catalyst in the aggressive second half. After scoring only two points in the opening half, Kynard sparked the rally and made the score 65-55 after Cedarville took its biggest lead of the night. He added another pair of layups in the 14-2 run that was capped by 3-pointers by Humphrey and Kevin Peterson.

Kynard finished the game 9-of-16 and 3-of-6 behind the arc. Humphrey was hot on his trail with 23 points for a new season-best on 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from downtown. He added six rebounds for good measure with three on each end.

Scott joined them in double-figures with 17 points and was a rebound away from a double-double. James added 13 with seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Branden Maughmer with 21 points.

The Storm now looks forward to the midway mark of their five-game home stand when they will take on Tiffin this Saturday. Tip-off with the Dragons is set for 3 p.m.
