Storm Drops Home Opener on Late Goal, 2-1

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's soccer team opened the 2017 season at home against the Eagles of Ashland University on Monday (Sept. 4).

Ashland used a late goal in the first overtime period to win the game by a final score of 2-1.

In the 25th minute, the Storm opened the scoring with a goal off of a free kick. Anne-Kristen Frank (Koeln, Germany / St. Dominikus Karlsruhe) placed a kick deep in the box from the far side of the field. Kristen Redwood (Euclid, Ohio / West Geauga) was there to put the ball away for her first collegiate goal.

Lake Erie led 1-0 at halftime despite trailing in shots 6-4.

Ashland tied the game in the 56th minute with a header from a corner kick.

The teams battled in the driving rain but neither team could find a scoring opportunity late in the second half.

With under four minutes left in the first overtime period, Ashland ended the game with a goal off a ball in the goalie box.

Ashland finished with a 13-10 shot advantage in the game.

Marissa Brannon (Concord, Ohio / Lake Catholic) made six saves in the goal for the Storm.

The Storm will return to the pitch on Wednesday (Sept. 6) with the GMAC opener at Ursuline.
