Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts Storm to 16-15 Victory

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College football team hosted the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers on Saturday (Sept. 30) afternoon at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.

The Storm came back from a 15-3 deficit with 13 consecutive points in the fourth quarter for a 16-15 victory over the Battlers.

Alderson Broaddus opened the scoring with a touchdown drive on their first drive. The Battlers made the two point conversion, taking an 8-0 lead four minutes into the game. On the next Battlers drive, the Lake Erie defense came up with a key sack and fumble recovery. Desmond Stanley (Macedonia, Ohio / Nordonia) forced the fumble on the sack and Marshall Peterson recovered the fumble. The Storm could not cash in on the turnover as the Battlers still led 8-0.

Late in the second quarter, Mike Muzic (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) connected on a 43-yard field goal that cut the deficit to 8-3. The Battlers led 8-3 at halftime.

Alderson Broaddus added a short touchdown run in the third quarter that made it 15-3 Battlers.

Lake Erie capped a ten play, 77-yard scoring drive with a two yard touchdown run by James Moore (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) in the fourth quarter with 7:30 to go. On the Battlers' first play on the next drive, Stanley came up with another forced fumble. Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio / Copley/ Stark State) recovered the fumble for the Storm. Lake Erie drove 33 yards in six plays following the turnover.  The Storm took the lead on a nine-yard touchdown run by Riley Frederiksen (Holly Springs, North Carolina / Middle Creek) with under six minutes left. The Battlers missed a game-winning field goal attempt with 19 seconds left in the game as the Storm won the contest 16-15.

Moore finished with 111 yards passing and 36 yards rushing along with a touchdown on the ground. Antwan Harris (Youngstown, Ohio / Austintown Fitch) was the leading rusher with 82 yards rushing. Javarian Smith had two catches for 51 catches.

Stanley led the Storm's defense with 13 total tackles (8 solo / 5 assisted), two forced fumbles and two sacks. Jaden King (Garner, North Carolina / Middle Creek) added ten tackles while Thomas Covington had eight tackles.

The Storm will travel to Findlay for a Great Midwest contest next Saturday (Oct. 7) at 7:00 PM.
