Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College football team was in action today as they were defeated by Urbana University, 37-10 on Homecoming.
Urbana opened the game with a lengthy drive that resulted in a touchdown. The Blue Knights drive was capped by a one yard touchdown through the air. The Storm answered with a 12 play drive that spanned over four minutes. The Lake Erie drive was capped by a 29 yard field goal by Michael Muzic (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) to make the score, 7-3 with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The defenses traded stops to end the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter Urbana extended their lead with a 48 yard pass play, to make the score 14-3, in favor of the Blue Knights. On the first play of the Urbana scoring drive, Zach Jude (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Bloom Carroll) forced a fumble but the Storm was unable to jump on the ball to secure the turnover. After a pair of three and outs by each offense the Blue Knights blocked a Storm punt, recovered the ball, and returned it for a touchdown. The Storm entered the intermission trailing, 21-3.
The Blue Knights came out of the locker room ready to play as they tacked on 14 unanswered points throughout the third quarter to take 35-3 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Storm defense held strong to open the fourth quarter with a goal line stand. The defense held up on fourth down as Ronald Whitfield (Washington D.C. / Woodrow Wilson) had a pass break up on fourth down. After the defensive stand for the Storm, Urbana's defense tackled the Storm in the backfield for a safety. Late in the fourth quarter, the Storm showed some fight as Thomas Covington (Tampa, Florida / Tampa Bay Tech.) recovered a fumble and returned the ball inside the Blue Knights 20 yard line. The Storm offense turned the fumble recovery into a touchdown when Javarian Smith (Pontiac, Mich. / Oakland Christian) rushed up the middle for a seven yard score. The Storm fell to Urbana 37-10.
Antwan Harris (Youngstown, Ohio / Austintown Fitch) led the rushing attack for the Storm as he had 50 yards on 16 carries. Joshua Collins (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) led the receiving corps as he grabbed five passes for 37 yards.
Defensively, the Storm was led by Covington as he had an interception and a fumble recovery on the day. Dylan Starks (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont Ross) led the Storm with nine tackles, including one tackle for a loss. Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio / Copley/Stark State) pitched in with four tackles on the day, three of which were tackles for a loss.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (Sept. 23) when they travel to take on Ohio Dominican with the game set to kick off at 7 p.m.
