Storm Falls To Hillsdale in Final Minute, 67-65

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team fell 67-65 to the Hillsdale College Chargers on Thursday (Jan. 26) in the final minute.

The Storm opened the game on a 7-0 run as Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored the first seven points. The Chargers answered with six straight points, cutting the lead to one. The Storm used back-to-back layups by Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) and Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) to open a 13-10 lead at the media timeout. The Chargers exited the huddle with four straight points to take a 14-13 lead. After a three pointer from Hillsdale, Lake Erie ended the quarter with a 6-0 run. The Storm led by four, 21-17 after one quarter.

Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) nailed two three pointers as a part of a 10-2 Lake Erie run at the start of the second quarter. Three different players scored as the Storm opened a 12 point lead. Hillsdale cut the lead to ten, 33-23, at the media timeout. Hillsdale went on a 12-4 run out of the timeout, pulling within two. Jones made two free throws with four seconds left as the Storm led 41-37 into the half.

Gabor led the Storm with 15 points in the first half as the Storm shot 49% from the floor.

Jones capped a Storm run at the start of the second half with a three-point play that gave the Storm an eight point lead at 48-40. Hillsdale closed the lead to four before Chaddock and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) pushed the lead back to eight. The Chargers ended the quarter on an 8-0 run that tied the game at 52 at the end of the quarter.

Benner began the fourth quarter with a layup thirty-five seconds in, regaining the Storm lead by two. Hillsdale pushed the lead to three halfway through the quarter. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) made a three pointer with 3:20 to go as Lake Erie led 61-59. With 1:26 to go, Shagovac turned a steal into a layup for a 65-62 Lake Erie lead. Hillsdale ended the game on a 5-0 run and made the game-winning three with 14 seconds to go as the Storm fell 67-65.

The Storm was led by Gabor, who scored 19 points, pulled down a team-high six rebounds and had four assists. Chaddock finished with ten points. Benner scored a career-high eight points in the game.

Lake Erie will return to the court as they travel to Ohio Dominican on Monday (Jan. 30).
