Storm Falls in Defensive Battle Against Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Tiffin University, 53-44. 

Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) opened the scoring as she hit a jumper on the opening possession of the game.  The game was a defensive battle, and Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) hit a three pointer off of an assist by Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) to give the Storm a 7-6 advantage at the midway point of the first quarter.  The Storm entered the second quarter ahead, 14-12.    

The Dragons opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run and took an 18-14 lead.  The run was ended when Shagovac hit a pair of foul shots to make the score 18-16 in favor of the Dragons.  Shagovac tied the game later in the second quarter as she hit a pair of foul shots, to make the score 21-21.  Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup at the buzzer to give the Storm a 23-21 advantage at the intermission.  The Storm was led by Shagovac as she had seven points and two assists in the half.

The Dragons started the third quarter on a 10-2 run, to take to a 31-25 lead.  The run was ended when Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) hit a jumper, and made the score 31-27 in favor of Tiffin.  The Storm continued to battle and entered the fourth quarter trailing, 33-32. 

After a pair of Shagovac foul shots cut the Dragons lead to 37-34, Tiffin went on a 6-0 run to take a 43-34 lead.  Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) ended the Dragons run as she made a layup for the Storm.  Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) hit a pair of foul shots to get the Storm within five points, before the Dragons were able to make back to back baskets to take a 49-40 advantage.  The Storm was unable to cut into the Dragons lead and fell, 53-44.      

The Storm was led by Shagovac as she had nine points, and two assists.  Jones pitched in with seven points, and four rebounds.  Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) led the defense as she had four steals. 

Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (February 20th) when they travel to take on Ohio Dominican at 1 P.M.
