Late Surge Lifts Timberwolves Over Storm

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Northwood University, 84-71. 

The Storm and the Timberwolves battled to the first media timeout of the first half as the Storm trailed, 13-8.  Out of the media timeout Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) hit a pair of foul shots before Northwood answered with a 9-2 run that saw the Timberwolves take a 22-12 lead before the Storm took a 30 second timeout to halt the Northwood momentum.  With just under seven minutes remaining in the first half the Storm went on a 5-0 run lead by Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North) as he had all five points.  The run cut the Northwood lead to single digits, 29-22 at the final media timeout of the first half. The Storm cut the lead to six before the Timberwolves ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 38-27 advantage into intermission.

At the half Lake Erie was led by Howard with a team high 10 points, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc.  Wells also pitched in with eight points and a steal in the half.

The Storm opened the second half on a 14-5 run that cut the Northwood lead to two with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game.  The run was sparked by Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) scoring seven of the 14 points.  The Timberwolves responded with a 10-0 run that saw their lead grow to 59-49.  The Storm battled back and cut the lead to single digits numerous times, but Northwood withstood Lake Erie's runs.  The Timberwolves held on to win the game, 84-71.

The Storm was led by Howard with a career high 25 points on over 52 percent shooting from the field.  Kynard also had a career high 19 points.  Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) pitched in with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.    

Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Monday (Dec. 19) when they travel to take on Division-I opponent Cleveland State in an exhibition game, with the game set to tip at 7 p.m.
