Big Second Half Lifts Cavaliers Over Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated by Walsh University today (January 17th), 52-39.  With the loss the Storm falls to 7-9 overall and 2-8 in the conference, and with the win the Cavaliers improve to 12-4 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

The game opened as a back and forth battle in which the game was tied on three separate occasions.  After the first media timeout the Storm went on a 9-1 run that was highlighted by a pair of three pointers by senior guard Jackie Murray (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary), and it gave the Storm a 10 point advantage, 17-7.  The Storm maintained their led for the remainder of the first half, and had a 30-20 lead at the intermission.  The Storm was led by Murray who had nine first half points, and freshman guard Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) who had six points and three rebounds in the half.   

The Cavaliers opened the second half on a 10-2 run that was ended when sophomore guard Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) hit a foul shot, the run gave Walsh a 34-32 advantage.  Walsh then went on a 14-0 run that increased the led to 48-35, and the run was stopped by a pair of foul shots by sophomore guard Dajia Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy).  The Storm cut the lead to nine when junior guard Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio / Miami Valley) made an unassisted layup.  Walsh won the game by 13, 52-39. 

The Storm was led by Murray who had nine points and a steal off the bench.  Gabor added eight points and four rebounds for the Storm.  Freshman center Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), Jones each grabbed nine rebounds for the Storm. 

Lake Erie will be back in action when they host Wayne St. on Thursday (January 22nd) at 5:30 P.M.
