Storm Falls Late to Malone, 67-65

CANTON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today (January 15th) by Malone, 67-65.  With the loss the Storm falls to 7-8 overall and 2-7 in the conference and with the win the Pioneers improve to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

The Storm opened the scoring when junior guard Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio / Miami Valley) made a layup off of an assist by junior guard Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton).  The game was back and forth through the first media timeout with the score 7-6 in favor of Malone.   Later in the half the Pioneers went on a 12-0 run, that gave them a 24-17 lead. The run was ended when freshman center Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup off of an assist by Carpenter.  The Storm went on a 6-0 run that got them within one, 24-23 in favor of Malone.  The run was highlighted by a Narducci layup off of an assist by Dawson. The half ended with Lake Erie down by four, 36-32.  The Storm was led by Dawson and senior guard Jackie Murray (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) who had eight and five points respectively. 

The Storm came out and cut the lead to one, 43-42 by the first media timeout of the second half.  It was highlighted by senior forward Chloe Irish (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) who made a layup off of an assist by Narducci. Both teams continued to battle and the lead changed hands four times in the five minutes, and with 9:59 to play in the game Malone had a three point advantage, 54-51.  The Pioneers made a layup in the final minute of the game to win, 67-65.

The Storm was led by Dawson who had a career high 19 points, and seven rebounds.  Freshman guard Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) added 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Off the bench Murray had a season high 11 points and seven assists.

Lake Erie will be back in action when they host Walsh University on Saturday (January 17th) at 1 P.M.
